  • Deploy to disaster and planned incidences through the Nation Disaster Medical System. Duties include traditional pharmacy services in a field hospital but vary based on incidence parameters.

  • Areal Point of Embarkation at Bush International Airport- DMAT, Trauma Critical Care Team, Airforce, Air National Guard, and FEMA joint mission to process hospital patients during evacuation. Primary mission- repackage patients for loading on Department of Defense aircraft for evacuation.

  • Downtown Shelter- Provide medical care to the shelter population 

  • Hurricane Irma/Maria, San Juan Puerto Rico, November 2017, NY-6

  • Field Clinic located at Pier 3 with USNS Comfort- provided triage and treatment of patients in coordination with USNS Comfort. Combined teams of Navy physicians, Navy corpsman, and DMAT teams saw 3000 patients in 9 days. All documentation for patients and labeling of medication was hand written.  

  • Hurricane Florence, North Carolina, September 2018, CO-3

  • Care center for evacuated long term care patients located in a church multipurpose room. Took over mission from Public Health Service and took care of patients until more permanent homes could be secured for the individual patients.

  • COVID-19 Texas DMAT Operations, Lackland AFB, Fed 2020, FL-4

  • First week- Lackland AFB Quarantine Center, 2nd cohort of travelers. Second week- Texas Center for Infectious Disease- COVID isolation center for symptomatic or positive test.

  • Hurricane Laura- Sulphur, LA, September 2020, UT-1

  • Emergency department decompression of the local hospital.

  • Hurricane Sally- Jackson, MS September 2020, UT-1

  • Staged in Jackson Mississippi and then sent home due to no medical requests.

  • COVID-19 California Support Mission 2020-2021

  • ED decompression mission at Antelope Valley Hospital and Monoclonal antibody infusion. Also supported the inpatient pharmacy with their duties from code response to restocking.

  • Incident Management Team Deployments

  • COVID-19 Texas IMT Pharmacist, Lackland AFB, March 2020, IMT-2

  • Lead pharmacist for IMT-2. In charge of maintaining the pharmacy operations for 2 DMAT teams from personal management to medication ordering. Multiagency interactions to ensure the continuity of the pharmacy side of the operation.

  • November 2014-2017 Mobile Acute Care Strike Team- Health and Human Services, Office of Emergency Preparedness, National Disaster Medical System-Deployable Resource to the United States Air Force

  • Deploy to pre-disaster areas to facilitate the evacuation of hospitals. Duties of the team include the staging of ICU patients at an air head, repackaging of patients with air transport compatible equipment. Pharmacist duties include managing medication to ensure the Critical Care Air Transport teams have what is needed during transport in military aircraft.

  • This team has now been combined with another team and is unfortunately no longer a part of the DMAT scope.

  • Daily activities include order entry, order verification, nurse education, patient education, IV admixture, pharmacokinetic consults and verification of restocks of medications. Started as a PRN position and transitioned full time September 2011 then transitioning back to PRN April 2014.

1990-2014 Jack Nelsen Farm and Dairy

  • Responsible for oversight and veterinary healthcare for 500+ dairy cows, including diagnosis and treatment of conditions and preparation and administration of intravenous medications, vaccines, and antibiotics. Assisted local veterinarian in the application of various heath and pregnancy checks and the resulting treatments. Various tractor work, irrigation and other farm related duties.


Committee Leadership and Involvement

October 2021-Current Pharmacy Advisor, Regional Pediatric Pandemic Network (Grant) (PPN)

  • This is a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funded effort to establish a national infrastructure, working through a network of hub institutions, that also combines existing EMSC EIIC and Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR) efforts along with multiple professional societies. Ideally, this establishes a platform for unbiased national dialogue focused on the care of children in disasters, that bridges public and private entities, and that has an infrastructure that can reach every community and every child.  

  • The Pediatric Pandemic Network launched with five children’s hospitals in 2021, and expanded to 10 in 2022. The network’s hospitals represent diverse regions across the U.S.:

  • University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital (Cleveland, OH) – lead site

  • Children’s National Hospital (Washington, DC) – lead site

  • Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital (Chicago, IL)

December 2019-Current Pharmacy Advisor, Western Region Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Medicine (WRAP-EM) centered at UCSF-Benioff (Grant)

  • U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) has awarded The Western Regional Alliance for Pediatric Emergency Management (WRAP-EM), led by a team at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospitals, a $3 million grant to develop one of two Pediatric Disaster Care Centers of Excellence (COE) in the country. As part of the grant, WRAP-EM will develop a model for improving emergency pediatric disaster response capabilities throughout the region. Its goal is to examine pediatric disaster care needs, address weaknesses in emergency communication or access and uncover unknown challenges that could be detrimental in a crisis. States involved: California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona and Utah
